Displayed in mountainous regions of northern Romania, just south from the border with Ukraine, Maramures and Bucovina were not affected by the village systematization plan of the Romanian communist party. This was a major factor for the perpetuation of their strong rural trait. It also led to the maintenance of the peasant daily life customs, these two regions being nowadays the two regions in Romania with the best preserved traditions.

Maramures (in north-west) is renowned for its amazing haystack-spotted landscape, colorful clothing, party music, ancient agricultural techniques and rituals, wooden architecture and religious customs.

Bucovina (in north-est) is the region of painted monasteries by definition. Melting pot of over 11 different ethnic groups, Bucovina has much more to offer though: warmhearted people, ancestral practices, colorful houses and amazing landscapes.

Across the border, in Ukraine, the city of Chernivtsi, easternmost big urban center of the Austrian Empire, comes as an example of refinement, elegance and high education that not even the Iron Curtain could make disappear.
