Among the different ethnic heritage, Transylvania especially takes pride in the Saxon and the Szekler patrimony. But what about the Gypsy heritage? Skillful people, both with music and with crafts, most of the Gypsies speak their ancestral language, wear their traditional clothes and follow a variety of older and newer social practices. If the Saxons, who migrated in this area from Western Europe, represent the influence of the Western world in Transylvania, the Gypsies, originating from India, represent the Eastern influence.

Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, Transylvania or ‘the land behind the forest’ is a symbol and a rare example in Europe for having preserved a more genuine ecosystem, including the big carnivores chain.

This tour puts in balance Transylvania’s two major strong points: the ethnic and cultural diversity with the biodiversity.

1

Cluj – Szeklerland

Departure from Cluj at 8 am, after breakfast, heading for Saxon Transylvania. Stop in a first village to meet the coppersmith Gypsies, exposing their stuff for sale on the side of the road. The Gypsy family will welcome you into their house and offer you a demonstration of their skills.

Lunch in a restaurant on the way.

Continue for Sighisoara medieval fortress (UNESCO heritage), one of the few of it’s kind still inhabited in Europe. Still surrounded by 9 of the initial 14 defense towers, the fortress of Sighisoara shelters not only beautiful Medieval architecture, but also medieval legends, such as the one connected to Vlad the Impaler ‘Dracula' birthplace.

Head for the Szeklerland.

In the afternoon meet the forester that will take you to the bear observatory. The observation will end the latest at night fall.

Dinner and accommodation in a guesthouse.

Car transfers: approx. 4h30min; ~230 km / 142 mi

Lunch on the way in a restaurant.
