In medieval times, Transylvania got to be inhabited by a German speaking population originating from Western Europe, now known with the generic term ‘Saxons’. Spreading all over the realm, they became at one point the majority population, mainly in southern Transylvania. Yet, there still were micro-regions with a different population majority, such as eastern Transylvania (Szekler population) and Hateg area (Romanian population).
While in Saxon inhabited lands fortifications were spreading very fast due to the Mongol and Turkish peril, it was just normal that the other parts of the region know the same process. The castle in nowadays Hunedoara went through similar changes, becoming the biggest fortified castle in Transylvania.
The resolution of this guided day tour from Cluj is to charm you both with the Vauban 18th century architecture in Alba Iulia and with the fairy-tale beauty of the castle in Hunedoara.
