Tour description

This is a Saxon heritage tour in Sibiu area. The Saxons were colonized in Transylvania beginning with the 12th century in order to defend the southeastern border of the Kingdom of Hungary. All their settlements were organized around a central church, which, in war times, was used as a refuge for the local families. As during the Middle Ages Transylvania was often invaded by the Mongol tribes, the Saxons began fortifying their houses and the churches.
The fortified churches we can still see today are the result of several fortification stages that took place during the centuries. This tour will reveal you one of these different types of fortifications: Calnic fortified church.
Next stop will be in Sibiel, were you’ll have a home cooked lunch in a guesthouse and will visit a very interesting icon painted on glass museum.
The tour continues with the main destination spot, namely the best defended medieval fortress in Transylvania, the ancient capital of all Transylvanian Saxons, the so called European Capital of Culture in 2007: Sibiu. Visit the four fortifications of the Medieval city, the Liar’s Bridge, The Small and the Big Squares.
Back in Cluj in late afternoon.
