Tour description

Day 1
Departure from Cluj at 8am, heading for Maramures. Positioned in North-Western part of Romania, in a mountain area, Maramures is a very special area, renowned for the living traditions, amazing haystacks landscape, colorful clothing, party music and wooden architecture.
Stop on the way to visit the wooden church of Surdesti, the tallest of all eight wooden churches included in the UNESCO heritage list. Take a walk in the best preserved traditional village in Maramures and have lunch with the locals. Continue with the visit of another UNESCO wooden church (Desesti or Budesti). Have dinner with the locals and accommodation a guesthouse.

Day 2
After breakfast, visit the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta, an unusually colorful spot, unexpectedly reflecting the love for live of the locals, and a traditional dowry room. Continue the journey with the visit of the Communist Resistance Memorial Museum in Sighetu Marmatiei. Have lunch with a local family and visit some craftsmen and a third UNESCO wooden church. Have dinner with the locals and accommodation a guesthouse.

Day 3
Breakfast and departure for Bukovina. Located in North-Eastern part of Romania, in a mountain area, Bukovina is the region on painted monasteries by definition. Melting pot of over 11 different ethnic groups, Bukovina has much more to offer though: amazing landscapes, colorful houses, well preserved Hutsul traditions and warmhearted people.
Stop in Ciocanesti to see the traditional decorated houses. Lunch on the way. Visit the painted monastery of Moldovita, famous for it’s Siege of Constantinople fresco scene. As decorating the Easter egg is an ancient Hutsul tradition that you must not miss, you’ll have the chance to assist at such a demonstration.
Continue the journey with the visit of the most complete and best preserved of the painted monasteries: Sucevita. If you’re looking for spiritual perfection, you may find inspiration here, watching the Ladder of Virtues fresco scene. Dinner with the locals and accommodation in a rural guesthouse.

Day 4
In the morning leave for Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Although the distance is quite short, it might take a couple of hours to cross the border and get there. Lunch in a restaurant and meet the local guide for the Chernivtsi city tour. Ranking third in size within the Austrian Empire, after Vienna and Prague, Chernivtsi is intriguingly beautiful and mysterious. Visit Chernivtsi university (UNESCO heritage) and head back to Romania in the afternoon. Dinner with the locals and accommodation in a rural guesthouse.

Day 5
After breakfast, visit Cacica salt mine, in the heart of the Polish inhabited micro-region of Bukovina. Continue with the Voronet painted monastery, the most famous of all eight painted monasteries included in UNESCO heritage. Get back to Cluj in late afternoon.
